Day 1: Trek from Trekkers Hostel (1,450m) to Sine Camp (2,596m) or Kalalama Camp (3,134m)
Your journey begins at Trekkers Hostel in Kyanjiki (1,450 meters), where you’ll meet your guides for a short briefing before starting the trek. The first part of the trail gradually ascends through Afro-Montane forest, rich in biodiversity, with towering hardwood trees, bright green moss, and a symphony of birdsong. The initial 6 kilometers are relatively steady, following the lush valley floor until you cross a river, after which the trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you head up to Sine Camp at 2,596 meters—a total elevation gain of 1,146 meters.
Sine Camp is beautifully positioned on a forested ridge with wooden huts nestled between ancient trees. Just 200 meters away lies the enchanting Enock Falls, where mossy vines, lichen-covered branches, and the sound of cascading water create a perfect natural backdrop. You may take an optional afternoon walk down to the base of the falls, or even explore another kilometer deeper into the forest for more serene nature scenes. For those who are fit and eager for a bit more elevation, you can continue ascending to Kalalama Camp (3,134m), where the rewards include stunning panoramic views of Kasese town, the lowland valleys, and even Lake Edward far below in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Dinner is served around a cozy campfire, with time to connect with your guides and fellow trekkers beneath the stars.
🌿 Day 2: Kalalama to Samalira Camp (3,170m) via Mutinda Trail (Optional)
Begin the day climbing through the steep yet stunning bamboo forest, a zone alive with fruiting trees and vibrant birds. As you ascend, listen for the call of the Rwenzori Turaco, a bird known for its striking crimson wings. If trekking during the dry season, keep an eye out for the Malachite Sunbird, which often flutters through the mid-altitude flowers searching for nectar. By the time you reach around 3,000 meters, the forest opens into the Giant Heather Zone, with twisted trees and ghostly lichen forming a landscape unlike anything else in East Africa.
At Kalalama Camp (3,134m), pause for a quick snack and take in the incredible views. From here, you have the option to embark on a short 2-kilometer side trek toward the Mutinda Peaks, where you’ll pass through high-altitude bogs filled with giant lobelia plants and colorful alpine flowers. Returning to Kalalama for lunch, you then make a gentle cross-ridge hike to Samalira Camp (3,170m). This scenic trail is almost level, crossing streams, moss-covered rocks, and mist-filled groves of towering heather trees. Samalira is one of the most atmospheric camps in the range—with the dining hut perched on the edge of a gorge overlooking two spectacular waterfalls. In the afternoon, you may descend a trail to the base of the waterfalls or climb a mossy ridge behind camp for more panoramic views. Dinner is served with a view, making for a perfect end to an enchanting day.
🌄 Day 3: Descent from Samalira to Trekkers Hostel via Forest View and Nyamwamba Camps
Your final day begins with a rewarding descent through the bamboo forests, offering sweeping views over the lower hills and valleys. As you drop in altitude, the trail brings you to Forest View Camp, where you pause for a refreshing lunch or snack. This section of forest is rich with birdlife and primates—expect sightings of blue monkeys and a variety of colorful birds darting through the foliage. The temperature begins to rise as you re-enter the Afro-Montane zone, surrounded by ancient trees draped in moss and sunlight filtering through the canopy.
After descending a steeper section, you’ll arrive at Nyamwamba Camp, a tranquil rest stop before the final stretch. From here, it’s a 6-kilometer walk to the park gate, where the trek concludes back at Trekkers Hostel. Along the way, take time to reflect on the journey as you retrace your steps through Uganda’s most captivating highland landscapes. With new memories, stunning photos, and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of the Rwenzoris, you’ll leave with a profound sense of connection to the Mountains of the Moon.
