- Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
Distance: ~7 to 8 kilometers.
Time: 5 to 6 hours.
Details: The trek begins at the park headquarters in Nyakalengija (1,600m). You’ll wind along the Mubuku River, crossing heavily forested slopes and passing through towering bamboo zones before arriving at Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.
- Day 2: Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija (Descent)
Time: 3 to 4 hours.
Details: After breakfast at the hut, you will begin your steep descent back down through the bamboo and montane forest to the park headquarters, typically concluding by early afternoon.
A Detailed Two-Day Rwenzori Trek to Nyabitaba Hut Itinerary
Day 1: Nyakalengijja to Nyabitaba hut

Your two-day, one-night trip over the Naybitaba–Mohoma route circle will begin with a briefing at the headquarters of Rwenzori Mountaineering Services, which you will visit after breakfast. When you reach the Rwenzori Mountains National Park entrance, officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority will register you before granting you access to the park. The hike begins at Nyakalengija and continues along a trail that passes through the Bakonzo Farmlands.
The next step is to set off on foot via the Rwenzori central circuit trail path, which will take you through a lush tropical forest dotted with tall elephant grass and thick underbrush. Forest elephants, chimpanzees, hyraxes, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and countless other species call this forest home.
