Rwenzori Kilembe Trail/Route (Southern Circuit) Treks & Map

The Kilembe Trail is a challenging, stunning 7- to 10-day trekking route up Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains to Margherita Peak (5,109m). Known as the “Southern Circuit,” it begins in Kilembe (near Kasese) and climbs through diverse zones—from lush montane forests to dramatic afro-alpine valleys.

Managed exclusively by Rwenzori Trekking Services, the trail is less crowded than the traditional Central Circuit and is highly favored for its exceptional acclimatization and well-placed, comfortable mountain huts.

Professor Scott Elliott initially traversed the Southern Circuit in 1895, but for a long time, the only way to reach the Rwenzori Mountains was by the Central Circuit, which was laid out by Luigi di Savoia in 1906.

Stunning lakes, glaciers, and towering peaks are best experienced on treks that follow the Southern Circuit, which is why Brilliant exclusively arranges these routes for our clients.

Along this route, you can see the abundant wildlife and plants of the Rwenzori Mountains. Additionally, hikers have more time to acclimatise on the lengthy Southern Circuit.

In addition to establishing routes in hitherto inaccessible regions, our local partners educate locals about the region and foster close linkages with the surrounding Bakonjo villages.

Rwenzori Kilembe Trail/Route

The Kilembe Trail, a thrilling trekking route in the Rwenzori Mountains, is managed by Rwenzori Trekking Services under the auspices of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This path leads hikers on a memorable journey to Margherita Peak and beyond, thanks to its different ecosystems, challenging terrain, and rich history. The Kilembe Trail offers hikers a more intimate and immersive experience of Uganda’s cultural and environmental heritage compared to the Central Circuit Trail, which is more linear.

The Kilembe Trail is unique among hiking trails since it provides more than just a summit. Hikers can explore some of the less well-known Rwenzori summits—including Mount Baker, Speke, Luigi di Savoia, Emin, and Gessi—along this Rwenzori Trail, which includes historical backgrounds, wildlife, and difficult situations. In 1895, Professor Scott Elliot set out on a historic journey into the Rwenzori Mountains, which is where the Kilembe Trail began. A notable landmark along the trail, Scott Elliot Pass was named after him in recognition of his explorations, which led to this trek. Rwenzori Trekking Services formally opened the Kilembe Trail to the public in 2011, and since then, it has grown in importance as a pathway for hikers seeking to ascend the Rwenzori Mountains. An continuing spirit of exploration and the magnetic fascination of these spectacular mountains are exemplified by the development of the route.
