Lakes & Rivers in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park in western Uganda contains over 20 stunning glacial and crater lakes. Formed by ancient ice melting and carved valleys, these alpine lakes sit high above sea level amid unique plant life like giant groundsels.

Major Lakes in the Rwenzoris

Lake Mahoma: Sits at 2,651 meters. It is the easiest and closest lake to reach from a park gate.
Lake Bujuku: Rests at 3,963 meters in a deep valley right under major peaks like Mount Stanley and Mount Baker.
Kitandara Lakes: Form twin upper and lower glacial tarns at over 4,000 meters, known for reflecting the clear sky and peaks.
Nyamwamba Valley Lakes: A string of eight scenic lakes formed by glacial debris blocking water flow.

Visiting and Trekking

Access: Reached via multi-day mountain climbing circuits like the Central Circuit or Kilembe Trail.
Best Time: The dry months of June to August and December to February offer safer, clearer hiking paths.
