A Detailed 15-Day Uganda Rwenzori Trek, Kibale And Queen Elizabeth

Day 1: Transfer to Kasese

Our safari guide/driver will take you up from your accommodation after breakfast and you will then proceed to Kasese via Queen Elizabeth National Park. On the route you will have a pause at the equator crossing for pictures and food and also in Mpambire to view the royal drum makers, if interested you can buy some of the locally created items. From here drive to Kasese via the Queen Elizabeth National Park looking for animals such as antelopes, continue to mount Rwenzori national park the third highest mountain in Africa. Dinner & Overnight in mountains of the moon, Margherita Hotel, Trekkers Hostel, Rwenzori Mountains Safari Lodge, Ruboni Community Camp.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut (2650 m)

After an early morning breakfast at the lodge/hotel you will be transported to the Nyakalengija trailhead (1600m) to start the walk. This is one of the most intriguing, but demanding activities and some physical conditioning is essential. Meet your guide who will take you through the full process up to Nyabitaba hut. In case you require porter they are available for hiring. Take the matoke (banana) plantations flanking the steep foothills and the native Bakonjo homesteads. Follow the trail along the Mubuku River, past landslides. Cross the Mahoma River and ascend steeply through bracken fern slopes and Podocarpus woodland to Nyabitaba Hut. Nyabitaba Hut, overnight

Day 3: John Matte Hut (3350 m)

From Nyabitaba follow the track down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge right below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Walk through the bamboo jungle and a lengthy, gruelling stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. Day 4: Bujuku Hut

The trail descends from John Matte Hut to bridge the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, home of huge lobelias. We had at last got across the bog, jumping from hummock to hummock, although not seldom with our feet in the icy slough beneath. The Upper Bigo bog gives way to Bujuku Lake, with views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Bujuku Hut is advantageously sited in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass. Overnight hut

Day 5: Acclimatization Hike from Bujuku Hike (towards Mt Speke)

Day 6: Elena Hut (4541 m)

The trail leaves Bujuku behind and passes through additional swamp, or you can climb the steep slopes west of the lake and wander through the magnificent Groundsel Gully as it ascends to Scott-Elliot Pass at 4372m. At the head of the gully a metal ladder gets you over a steep stretch of the trail which then divides in two. The trail on your right leads to Elena Hut and Mount Stanley on a tee trail over huge boulders. The trail on your left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and down to Kitandara Lakes. Day 7: Margherita peak (5109 m)

For those heading for Margherita summit (5109m), proceed to the Stanley Glacier base. The trek to the top of Margherita takes between 5 to 7 hours depending on the weather conditions and the rate at which this mountain is climbed. This challenging hike takes you over three glaciers, treacherous rock, ice and incredibly exposed parts which are open on many sides. NOTE: This is a climb for the physically fit and technical climber only. Ascending the glaciers, pass the Stanley Plateau and continue climbing. Scramble to the top of Margherita, the highest point of the Rwenzoris. Acclimatise to fog, altitude sickness and chilly weather. Due to the high altitude and difficult weather, don’t be disappointed if you don’t make it to the top. Enjoy stunning views back to Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke, then to Mount Stanley and down to the Kitandara Lakes as you make your way back via the Scott-Elliot pass. Day 8: Guy Yeoman Hut (3260 m)

Follow the trail from Kitandara steeply up the headwall, fanning out from the base of Mount Baker, along the south side of the summit to Fresh Field Pass. Here you can see the Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north. From the pass follow the long trek past the rock shelter at Bujongolo, basecamp for the historic expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi in 1906. Overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut

Day 9: Nyabitaba (2650 m)

Follow the path down to the Nyabitaba hut. The trail may be slippery and muddy and so demands cautious balancing across the vertical muck or high rock. Remember this is part of the adventure with in this mountain. Nyabitaba Hut – overnight stay

Day 10: Nyakalengija trailhead (1600 m)

Descend slowly down the muddy tracks to the trailhead, finally reaching Kasese around lunch time. After lunch break in Kasese, you will proceed to Queen Elizabeth National Park. If you have energy this evening go for an evening game drive at the park. Day 11: Game drive around the Queen’s mile launch cruise

After breakfast, enjoy an early morning game drive to spot other creatures that inhabit this park, games expected to view include lions, Leopards, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, gigantic forest hogs, water bucks, Uganda Kobs, bush back just to list but a few. After this amazing moment escape to the lodge for Breakfast and lunch and post lunch enjoy two hours launch boat over the Kazinga waterway which links lakes George and Edward. The launch trip will reward you with the opportunity to witness more kinds of animals like hippos and crocodiles just a few meters from the boat while elephants and buffaloes can be sighted along the shoreline with different types of birds that live and graze on the lake. Day 12: Game drive and Transfer to Kibale

Enjoy your early morning cup of coffee, to embark on an early morning game drive to catch up with the early risers getting out of their hide-out after, return to the lodge for lunch and then after you will be transferred to kabale forest national park a home to over 13 species of primates couple with chimpanzee the closest relative of man. Day 13: Chimpanzee tracking and Bigodi nature walk

Following an early breakfast, you will be taken to the Kanyanchu Tourist Center for a briefing before you begin tracking chimpanzees, which are our closest cousins and share almost 98% of human DNA. Although it is not a given, there is a 90% possibility of seeing chimpanzees from this tropical damp forest. Other primate species, including the endangered Red Colobus monkey, Black and White Colobus monkey, uncommon L’hoest’s monkey, Blue monkey, Grey-cheeked Mangabey, Red-tailed monkey, and several bird and tree species, may be spotted on the walk. After this wonderful activity return back to the lodge for lunch, relax and then in the evening we shall go for another activity at Bigodi swamp sanctuary for primate, birds, butterflies viewing among others, Dinner and an overnight at (Luxury) Kyaninga lodge, Primate Lodge kibale, Ndali Lodge, (mid-range) Kibale Forest Camp, Rwenzori View Guest House, and Chimps Nest Lodge (budget) Chimpanzee Forest Guest House.

Day 14: Transfer back to Kampala-Evening city tour

Following a filling breakfast, you will be driven back to Kampala, where you will have lunch in the afternoon before taking a tour of the city and seeing a variety of fascinating locations, such as the Kasubi tombs, the Uganda museum, the Namirembe Cathedral, the Namugongo shrine, and marketplaces.
