4-Day Epic Bujuku Hike Itinerary

Day 1: John Matte Camp Arrival & Acclimatization

Begin your journey at the Nyamwamba Park Gate (1,980 m), where your guide conducts final gear checks, issues mountain permits, and reviews safety procedures. Setting off through lush montane forest, you’ll encounter stands of giant lobelias and towering heathers, serenaded by Rwenzori’s endemic birdlife. After approximately 5 km and 4–5 hours of steady ascent, reach John Matte Camp (3,600 m). Here, our camp crew welcomes you with warm drinks and light refreshments. Spend the afternoon resting, exploring nearby vistas, and acclimatizing to the thinner air. Your evening features a briefing on tomorrow’s trek to Bujuku Lake, followed by a nutritious multi-course dinner and a well-earned night’s rest under the stars.

Day 2: John Matte Camp → Bujuku Camp (3,962 m)

After a pre-dawn breakfast, depart John Matte Camp and cross the famous grassy slopes of the central circuit, venturing into the Afro-alpine zone. The trail undulates past giant groundsels and moss-covered boulders, with occasional glimpses of Mount Baker’s eastern ridge. After 6–7 hours of hiking, you’ll crest at the Bigo Bog plateau, an otherworldly heathland of wet sphagnum moss and crystal-clear streams. From here, descend gradually to Bujuku Camp beside the sapphire waters of Bujuku Lake (3,962 m). Settle into your tents, then spend the afternoon photographing the mirrored peaks and exploring the lake’s shoreline. Tonight’s campfire stories and hearty stew will recharge you for tomorrow’s summit push toward Mount Speke.

Day 3: Summit Push to Mount Speke (4,890 m) & Return to Bujuku

Start before sunrise with a light hot beverage, then set off on the steep moraine and rocky scree toward the Speke Corridor. You’ll navigate narrow ridgelines, snow patches (season permitting), and glacial debris, guided by our experienced alpine leader. After approximately 6–8 hours round-trip, stand triumphant on the slopes of Mount Speke (4,890 m), Uganda’s fourth-highest peak, soaking in sweeping panoramas of Lake Bujuku below. The descent to camp is steep but manageable—rewarding you with sense of accomplishment and panoramic vistas. Back at Bujuku Camp, enjoy a celebratory meal, hot drinks, and well-deserved rest in anticipation of your final descent.

Day 4: Bujuku Camp → Nyamwamba Gate & Farewell

Following breakfast, break camp and retrace your footsteps through the alpine meadow and afro-alpine woodland, noting wildlife tracks and alpine flora one last time. The descent covers roughly 10 km and takes 5–6 hours, passing through John Matte Camp for a brief rest and lunch before continuing to the park exit. Arrive at Nyamwamba Gate by mid-afternoon, where certificates of achievement will be presented and photos shared. Your driver transfer awaits to return you comfortably to your Kampala or Fort Portal accommodation. Bid farewell to your guides and porters, knowing you’ve conquered the epic Bujuku route and collected memories that will last a lifetime.
