Rwenzori Trekking Experts Company | About Us
The Rwenzori Trekking Experts Company – Guiding Adventurers Through Africa’s Mountains of the Moon
High in the heart of western Uganda, where the equator meets permanent snow and glaciers cling to peaks shrouded in mist, lies one of the most extraordinary — and least explored — mountain ranges on Earth. The Rwenzori Mountains, immortalized by ancient geographers as the “Mountains of the Moon,” are a landscape unlike anywhere else: alpine bogs give way to forests of giant lobelias and groundsel, glacier-capped summits rise above the clouds, and rare wildlife thrives in near-total isolation from the modern world.
This is our home, and this is our life’s work.
The Rwenzori Trekking Experts was founded by a team of passionate mountaineers, conservationists, and local guides who believed the Rwenzoris deserved more than to be an afterthought on Uganda’s tourism map. While Kilimanjaro and the Virunga gorillas often steal the spotlight, we saw a mountain range of equal — if not greater — grandeur, and a community of skilled local guides whose knowledge of this terrain had been passed down through generations. We built our company to bring that expertise to travelers from around the world, safely, sustainably, and authentically.
Our Story
Our founders grew up in the villages nestled at the base of the Rwenzoris, in the shadow of Mount Stanley and its glistening glaciers. Long before we became a registered trekking company, we were porters, cooks, and informal guides for the handful of intrepid travelers who found their way to this remote corner of Uganda. Over the years, as demand grew and word spread about the beauty and challenge of the Rwenzori trails, we formalized our operation — investing in proper training, safety certifications, and equipment, while never losing sight of the deep, personal connection to the mountain that started it all.
Today, The Rwenzori Trekking Experts is one of Uganda’s most trusted and specialized trekking companies, but our roots remain the same: this is our mountain, our community, and our story to share with you.
What Makes Us Different
We Specialize — We Don’t Generalize
Many tour operators offer the Rwenzoris as one small piece of a broader East African itinerary. We do not. Every guide, porter, cook, and staff member on our team works exclusively within the Rwenzori range. This singular focus means an unmatched depth of knowledge — about the shifting weather patterns, the safest river crossings, the best-kept campsites, and the subtle signs that separate a good trek from a great one.
Born of the Mountain
Our guides didn’t learn the Rwenzoris from a manual. They grew up on these slopes. Many belong to the Bakonzo people, whose ancestral connection to the mountains spans centuries and who consider the Rwenzoris sacred. This isn’t just a job for our team — it’s a heritage they’re proud to share with every traveler who joins us.
Safety Without Compromise
The Rwenzoris present real challenges: sustained high altitude, unpredictable weather, dense mud and bog terrain, and — for those summiting Margherita Peak — genuine technical glacier travel. We take these risks seriously. Our lead guides are trained in wilderness first response and high-altitude rescue, our teams carry satellite communication devices and emergency oxygen on every trek, and our itineraries are built with proper acclimatization days, not compressed for the sake of convenience.
Small Groups, Personal Attention
We intentionally limit group sizes so that every trekker receives individualized attention. Pacing, rest stops, and even route adjustments can be tailored to your fitness level and goals — whether you’re an experienced alpinist chasing a technical summit or a first-time trekker seeking an unforgettable but manageable adventure.
Committed to Community and Conservation
The Rwenzoris are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to fragile Afro-alpine ecosystems, endangered species, and delicate glacier systems that are shrinking with each passing year. We operate under strict Leave No Trace principles and work closely with the Rwenzori Mountains National Park authority to protect this environment for future generations.
We’re equally committed to the people who make our treks possible. A portion of every booking supports fair wages and welfare programs for our porters, as well as community development initiatives in the villages surrounding the park — including education support and local infrastructure projects.
End-to-End Logistics, Zero Hassle
From national park permits and route planning to camping equipment, meals, and airport transfers, we manage every detail of your journey. Our goal is simple: you focus on the experience of the climb, and we handle everything else.
Our Guides & Team
Every member of our guiding team is trained in wilderness safety, first aid, and — for those leading summit attempts on Margherita Peak — technical mountaineering skills including rope work, glacier travel, and rock scrambling. Beyond technical skill, our guides are natural storytellers, deeply knowledgeable about the region’s unique flora, fauna, geology, and cultural history. Trekking with us means more than reaching a summit; it means understanding the mountain you’re standing on.
Our support teams — porters, cooks, and camp staff — are equally essential to the experience. Treated fairly and paid transparently, our porters are often the unsung heroes of every successful summit, carrying gear through some of the most demanding terrain in Africa with remarkable skill and good humor.
Our Routes
We offer a range of itineraries to match different goals, timelines, and experience levels:
- Central Circuit Trail — the classic, most complete route through the heart of the range, typically 8–9 days
- Kilembe Trail — a slightly shorter, less-crowded alternative with stunning scenery, typically 7–9 days
- Margherita Peak Summit Treks — technical routes to Uganda’s highest point, including glacier travel and rock scrambling
- Non-Technical Peak Treks — shorter 5–6 day options to secondary peaks for trekkers seeking spectacular scenery without technical climbing
Every itinerary includes proper acclimatization planning, because we believe a safe, well-paced trek is always better than a rushed one.
Our Mission
To share the extraordinary beauty and challenge of the Rwenzori Mountains with the world — safely, sustainably, and authentically — while protecting the ecosystem we call home and uplifting the communities who have lived alongside these mountains for generations.
Whether you’re drawn by the challenge of standing atop Margherita Peak, the surreal beauty of giant lobelias wreathed in mist, or the chance to experience one of Africa’s true hidden gems, The Rwenzori Trekking Experts is ready to guide you there.
Come climb with the people who call these mountains home.
